Release of Latvian Wikipedia

6 June 2003

The Latvian Wikipedia is the edition of the free online encyclopedia written in Latvian, a Baltic language spoken mainly in Latvia. It was launched in the early 2000s, some years after the country had regained independence from the Soviet Union and joined international institutions. Its contributors are largely Latvians living in the country and abroad, and it covers topics from national history and folklore to science. Because Latvian is a language with a comparatively small number of speakers, the project is considered important for the presence of the language on the internet. It is one of the many Wikipedia editions run by volunteers under the Wikimedia Foundation.
