The Indonesian edition of Wikipedia was launched in 2003 and is written in Bahasa Indonesia, the national language of Indonesia, which is spoken by well over a hundred million people. It grew slowly at first, in a country where internet use was then limited, and expanded in the 2010s as smartphone use increased. Today it contains hundreds of thousands of articles, and it is among the larger Asian-language editions. Volunteers write about Indonesian history, culture, geography and politics, and local Wikimedia communities have held training sessions and editing events. Indonesia's many regional languages have separate editions, such as Javanese and Sundanese.
