Release of The Rescuers

19 June 1977

The Rescuers is an animated feature from Walt Disney Productions, loosely based on children's books by Margery Sharp. It follows two mice, the cautious Bernard and the elegant Miss Bianca, who belong to a secret Rescue Aid Society operating from the basement of the United Nations in New York. They travel to the Louisiana bayou to save Penny, a young orphan held captive by the villain Madame Medusa, who wants her to retrieve a giant diamond. The voices were provided by Bob Newhart and Eva Gabor, among others. The film was a commercial success and a high point after a quiet period for the studio, and it led to a sequel, The Rescuers Down Under, in 1990, Disney's first theatrical animated sequel.
