Cambodian–Vietnamese War

from 30 April 1977 to 23 October 1991

The Cambodian–Vietnamese War grew out of border clashes provoked by the Khmer Rouge regime of Democratic Kampuchea, whose forces raided Vietnamese villages. Vietnam invaded in December 1978 and captured Phnom Penh in January 1979, overthrowing the regime of Pol Pot, which had caused the deaths of an estimated one and a half to two million Cambodians, and installed a government led by Heng Samrin. China, a backer of the Khmer Rouge, invaded northern Vietnam in February 1979 in a brief border war. The Khmer Rouge continued a guerrilla war from the Thai border, supported by China and Thailand, within a coalition in exile. Vietnam withdrew its forces in 1989, and the conflict ended with the Paris Peace Agreements of October 1991.
