Release of The Little Mermaid

17 November 1989

The Little Mermaid is an animated musical film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, loosely based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. It tells of Ariel, a young mermaid who longs to live on land and makes a bargain with the sea witch Ursula in order to be with a human prince. The songs by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, including Under the Sea and Part of Your World, were a major part of its appeal, and the film won Academy Awards for its score and for the song Under the Sea. Its success is often seen as the beginning of the Disney Renaissance, a period of acclaimed animated films in the 1990s. A live-action version appeared in 2023.
