Release of The Lion King

15 June 1994

The Lion King is an animated musical film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation, directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff and released in June 1994. It tells the story of Simba, a young lion who is the heir to the throne of the Pride Lands in Africa, who flees after his father Mufasa is killed by his uncle Scar, and who returns as an adult to reclaim his kingdom. The story draws on Shakespeare's Hamlet and on traditional tales of a prince's exile and return. The music includes songs by Elton John and Tim Rice, such as Circle of Life and Can You Feel the Love Tonight, and a score by Hans Zimmer. It was a huge commercial success, won two Academy Awards, and inspired a Broadway musical and remakes.
