Richard Nixon died on 22 April 1994 in Weill Cornell Medical Center, aged 81. An American Republican politician from California, Nixon was a congressman, senator and vice president under Dwight Eisenhower before narrowly losing the 1960 presidential election and then winning in 1968. As the 37th president, he opened relations with China in 1972, pursued détente with the Soviet Union and signed the first arms-limitation agreements, and he ended American involvement in the Vietnam War in 1973. The Watergate scandal, involving a break-in at Democratic offices and its cover-up, led the House Judiciary Committee to vote articles of impeachment, and in August 1974 Nixon became the only US president to resign. Gerald Ford pardoned him.
