Construction of Kansai International Airport

4 September 1994

Kansai International Airport serves the Osaka, Kobe and Kyoto region of Japan and is built on an artificial island in Osaka Bay, about five kilometres from the coast. It was constructed on reclaimed land to avoid the noise problems of the crowded Osaka International Airport at Itami, and so that it could operate around the clock. The terminal building was designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano and is among the longest in the world. The island sank more than expected as the soft seabed under it settled, which led to expensive measures to keep it above water. The airport is a major gateway for international travellers to western Japan.
