Release of Tamil Wikipedia

September 2003

The Tamil Wikipedia is the edition of the free online encyclopaedia written in the Tamil language, spoken by tens of millions of people in Tamil Nadu in India, in Sri Lanka, in Singapore and in diaspora communities around the world. It started in September 2003, among the first Wikipedias in Indian languages, and was developed by volunteers who had to solve problems of typing and displaying the Tamil script on computers. The community has organised editing workshops and contests, as well as partnerships with universities and cultural institutions. It is one of the largest Wikipedias in an Indian language, and it has helped to bring digital resources to Tamil speakers.
