Release of MySQL

23 May 1995

MySQL is an open-source relational database management system first released by the Swedish company MySQL AB, founded by Michael Widenius, David Axmark and Allan Larsson. It used the SQL query language and was designed to be fast and easy to install, which suited the web applications that were multiplying in the late 1990s and 2000s. It became a core part of the LAMP stack, alongside Linux, Apache and PHP, and was used by many large sites including early versions of Facebook, Wikipedia and Twitter. Sun Microsystems bought MySQL AB in 2008, and Oracle acquired Sun in 2010. Widenius then started a compatible fork called MariaDB over concerns about the future of the project under Oracle.
