Release of Blender

2 January 1994

Blender is a free and open-source suite for 3D creation, used for modeling, animation, rendering, simulation and video editing. Development began in January 1994 under Ton Roosendaal at the Dutch animation studio NeoGeo as an in-house tool, and it was released publicly later in the decade. After the company set up to market it failed in 2002, a crowdfunding campaign raised enough money for the source code to be released under the GNU General Public License, and the Blender Foundation took over its development. The Blender Institute has produced open movies such as Elephants Dream and Big Buck Bunny to test and promote the software. Independent artists, studios and researchers use Blender widely.
