Flickr is an image and video hosting service and online community. It was launched by Ludicorp, a Vancouver company led by Stewart Butterfield and Caterina Fake, which had been working on an online game when the photo-sharing feature they had built for it proved more popular. Flickr pioneered features such as tagging and social sharing of photographs, and it became popular with photographers and bloggers. Yahoo acquired it in 2005, and in 2018 it was bought by the photo company SmugMug. Flickr supports Creative Commons licensing, and its Flickr Commons project allows libraries and museums to share historical photographs with the public.
