Release of Bambi

14 August 1942

Bambi is an animated film made by Walt Disney Productions, based on Felix Salten's 1923 Austrian novel Bambi, a Life in the Woods. It follows a young deer from his birth through the seasons as he grows up in the forest, meets friends such as the rabbit Thumper and the skunk Flower, and loses his mother to a hunter. The film was directed by David Hand and is known for its naturalistic animation of animals and its soft, painterly backgrounds, influenced by the artist Tyrus Wong. Its release during the Second World War limited its first earnings, but it later became a success in re-releases and is regarded as a classic.
