Construction of Treblinka extermination camp

23 July 1942

Treblinka was a Nazi extermination camp in occupied Poland, northeast of Warsaw, built as part of Operation Reinhard, the plan to murder the Jews of the General Government. It began operating in July 1942, when the deportation of the Jews of the Warsaw Ghetto started. Victims arrived by train and were murdered in gas chambers within hours, and only a few were kept alive for forced labor in running the camp. Estimates of the dead run to well over half a million Jews, along with a smaller number of Roma. An uprising by prisoners in August 1943 allowed some to escape, and the Germans then dismantled the camp to hide the crimes.
