Battle of Stalingrad

from 23 August 1942 to 2 February 1943

The Battle of Stalingrad was a major battle of the Second World War on the Eastern Front, fought between Germany and its allies and the Soviet Union for the city on the Volga that bore Stalin's name. The German Sixth Army under Friedrich Paulus fought its way into the city in vicious street fighting against the Soviet 62nd Army, commanded by Vasily Chuikov. In November the Red Army launched Operation Uranus, a counteroffensive that encircled the German forces, and attempts to relieve or supply them failed. Paulus surrendered the remnants of his army at the start of February. The battle is regarded as a turning point of the war in Europe and one of the bloodiest battles in history, with enormous military and civilian suffering.
