Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring, published on 27 September 1962, documented how pesticides such as DDT were poisoning wildlife, from songbirds to the bald eagle, and entering food chains and human bodies. The chemical industry attacked her, but a presidential science committee in 1963 supported her findings. The book helped to start the modern environmental movement and led to a ban on DDT for agricultural use in the United States in 1972, the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency in 1970, and Earth Day.
