Establishment of Pirin National Park

8 November 1962

Pirin National Park protects a mountain range in southwestern Bulgaria, which has alpine landscapes with over a hundred glacial lakes, limestone peaks and ancient forests. The highest summit, Vihren, is about 2,914 metres, and the park holds some of the oldest trees in the Balkans, such as the Baikushev pine, which is said to be over a thousand years old. The mountains shelter rare and endemic plants, as well as brown bears, wolves and chamois. The park was created in the early 1960s, and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983. Its protection has been the subject of controversy over the expansion of ski resorts at Bansko.
