Establishment of Khao Yai National Park

8 September 1962

Khao Yai National Park is Thailand's first national park, in a mountainous area northeast of Bangkok, and one of the best known in Southeast Asia. It covers a mix of evergreen and deciduous forest, grassland and waterfalls, and it is home to Asian elephants, gibbons, hornbills, macaques, deer and a small number of tigers and other big cats. The park is part of the Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex, which UNESCO listed as a World Heritage Site because of its biodiversity, and it attracts large numbers of visitors from the capital. Large colonies of bats emerge from caves at dusk. The park is threatened by illegal logging and by the pressures of tourism and nearby development.
