Qara Qoyunlu, meaning the Black Sheep Turkomans, was a Turkoman dynasty that ruled parts of Iran, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Iraq in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The confederation rose in the aftermath of the Mongol Ilkhanate, with its base around Lake Van, and it competed with other Turkic powers, especially the Aq Qoyunlu, or White Sheep Turkomans. Its most powerful ruler was Jahan Shah, who controlled a large territory from Tabriz and also built the Blue Mosque of Tabriz. After defeats by Timur and his successors the state recovered, but it weakened because of dynastic struggles and was finally defeated by Uzun Hasan of the Aq Qoyunlu in the 1460s.
