Construction of Ulm Minster

1377

Ulm Minster is a Gothic church in the German city of Ulm, in Baden-Wurttemberg, and it has the tallest church spire in the world, at about 161 metres. It was begun as a parish church financed by the citizens of Ulm, rather than by a bishop, to show the wealth and independence of the free imperial city. The building work was interrupted for centuries, partly because of the Reformation, which made the city Protestant, and the tower was only finished in the nineteenth century, using the original plans. The church survived the bombing of the city in the Second World War, though much of the old town was destroyed.
