Aq Qoyunlu, meaning the White Sheep Turkomans, was a Turkoman tribal confederation that ruled parts of eastern Anatolia, Azerbaijan, Iraq and Iran in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. It began as a small group in the region of Diyarbakir and rose to power under Uzun Hasan, who defeated the rival Qara Qoyunlu and the Timurids and made Tabriz his capital. Uzun Hasan was defeated by the Ottomans at the Battle of Otlukbeli in 1473, and his dynasty never regained its strength. It was finally overthrown by Shah Ismail I, founder of the Safavid dynasty, who was in part descended from Uzun Hasan's family. Under its rule, there was a flourishing of Persian culture and trade, linking the Mediterranean to the East.
