Construction of Bran Castle

c. 1377

Bran Castle is a medieval fortress in the Carpathian mountains of Transylvania, near Brasov, built on a rock overlooking the pass between Transylvania and Wallachia. It was built by the Saxon inhabitants of Brasov, with permission from the Hungarian king Louis I, to guard the mountain pass and trade route, and it was used as a customs post. The castle is often linked to Dracula because of a supposed resemblance to the castle in Bram Stoker's novel, although Stoker never visited it, and the link to the historical Vlad the Impaler is slight. In the twentieth century it was a royal residence of Queen Marie of Romania, and it is now a museum.
