Publication of Rapunzel

1812

Rapunzel is a fairy tale about a girl with very long hair who is locked in a tower by a sorceress. The Brothers Grimm included it in the first edition of their collection of tales, published in 1812. Their version is derived from a German story by Friedrich Schulz, which was in turn a translation of a French tale of the late 17th century by Charlotte-Rose de Caumont de La Force, and the story has older Italian roots. In the Grimm version, a prince climbs her hair, is blinded by the sorceress, and finds Rapunzel again after years of wandering. The tale has been retold in countless books, films and songs.
