Publication of One Hundred Years of Solitude

1967

One Hundred Years of Solitude is a novel by the Colombian writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez, first published in 1967 in Buenos Aires. It follows several generations of the Buendia family in the fictional town of Macondo, mixing everyday events with magical happenings, in a style that became known as magical realism. The story draws on the political violence, foreign investment and social change in Colombia and Latin America, and on the writer's own memories of his childhood home. It was an immediate success across the Spanish-speaking world and was translated into dozens of languages. It helped bring Latin American literature to international attention, and Garcia Marquez received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1982.
