Launch of Rolling Stone

1967

Rolling Stone is an American magazine focused on music, politics and popular culture, founded in San Francisco by Jann Wenner and the critic Ralph J. Gleason. Its first issue was printed on newspaper stock and quickly became a voice of the rock counterculture. It became known for long interviews, political reporting, the work of writers such as Hunter S. Thompson, whose Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas first appeared in its pages, and photographs by Annie Leibovitz. The magazine moved to New York in 1977 and later ran well-known lists such as its ranking of the greatest albums. Wenner Media sold a majority stake to Penske Media in 2017 and the rest in 2019.
