July 1999

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is the third novel in J. K. Rowling's series, published in July 1999. In the story, Harry, now in his third year at Hogwarts, learns that the convicted murderer Sirius Black has escaped from the wizard prison of Azkaban and is thought to be after him. The school is guarded by Dementors, creatures that drain happiness from those near them, and Harry learns to defend himself from them with the help of his new teacher, Remus Lupin. The plot involves the use of a time-turner and reveals hidden truths about Harry's parents. Many readers consider it a turning point, as the series became darker and more complex. It won several awards and was adapted for film in 2004.
