Construction of Millennium Stadium

26 June 1999

The Millennium Stadium, today known as the Principality Stadium, is the national stadium of Wales, standing in the centre of Cardiff next to the River Taff. It was built for the 1999 Rugby World Cup, on the site of the old National Stadium at Cardiff Arms Park, and it is notable for its retractable roof, which allows matches to take place under cover. As well as hosting Wales internationals, it staged the FA Cup final and other English cup finals for several years while Wembley Stadium was being rebuilt. It also held the 2017 UEFA Champions League final and many concerts. The stadium got its present name in 2016 after a sponsorship agreement.
