Publication of Dracula

26 May 1897

Bram Stoker's Dracula is a Gothic horror novel told through letters, diary entries and newspaper clippings. The solicitor Jonathan Harker travels to Transylvania to meet Count Dracula, a vampire, who then moves to England, preying on Harker's fiancee Mina and her friend Lucy. A band of men led by the Dutch scholar Professor Van Helsing pursues him back to Transylvania. Stoker drew on folklore and on reading about Eastern European history, including, it is often said, the Wallachian prince Vlad the Impaler. The book established the modern image of the vampire and has inspired countless films, from Nosferatu in 1922 to those with Bela Lugosi and Christopher Lee.
