Amelia Earhart was born on 24 July 1897 in Atchison. An American aviation pioneer, Earhart was born in Atchison, Kansas, and learned to fly in California in the early 1920s. In 1932 she became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, and she set many other records, including being the first person to fly solo from Hawaii to California in 1935. She was a prominent advocate for women in aviation, helped found the Ninety-Nines organization of women pilots, and wrote bestselling books. In 1937, attempting to fly around the world, she and her navigator Fred Noonan disappeared over the Pacific near Howland Island. Despite many searches and theories, their fate has never been established, and she was declared legally dead in 1939.
