Angola Avante, meaning Forward Angola, is the national anthem of Angola. It was adopted when the country became independent from Portugal in November 1975, after a long anti-colonial war led by several rival liberation movements. The words were written by Manuel Rui Monteiro and the music was composed by Rui Mingas, both Angolan artists associated with the independence movement. The anthem celebrates the sacrifices of the struggle, honours the heroes of the nation and calls on Angolans to build a country of peace and progress. It replaced the anthem of the colonial period and remained in use after the end of the one-party era and the civil war.
