Construction of Zara

1975

Zara is a Spanish fashion retailer and the best-known brand of the Inditex group. Amancio Ortega, who had worked in the clothing trade since he was a teenager, opened the first store in the Galician city of A Coruña in the mid-1970s. According to the usual account, he planned to call it Zorba, but the name was already taken nearby, so the letters were rearranged to make Zara. The company became known for its rapid design cycle, which brings new styles from sketch to shop floor in a few weeks, and for its own distribution system. Zara expanded across Spain, then to Portugal and the rest of the world, and is now one of the biggest fashion chains.
