Origins of Swedish Hockey League

5 October 1975

The Swedish Hockey League, or SHL, is the top level of professional ice hockey in Sweden. It began in the 1975-76 season under the name Elitserien, replacing the former top division, and it was renamed the SHL in 2013. Its clubs include Frolunda, Farjestad, Djurgarden, Brynas and Lulea, and the winner of the playoffs is Swedish champion. The league is regarded as one of the strongest in Europe and a source of players for the National Hockey League. Many Swedish stars played in it before moving to North America, including Peter Forsberg, Nicklas Lidstrom and Henrik Lundqvist.
