Creation of OpenBSD

18 October 1995

OpenBSD is a free Unix-like operating system known for its focus on security, correctness and clean code. It was founded by Theo de Raadt in 1995, after a dispute with other developers led to his departure from the NetBSD project, and it was forked from NetBSD. The project audits its source code for security flaws and enables safety features by default. OpenBSD developers also created widely used tools such as OpenSSH, the secure remote login suite, and the PF packet filter. Its releases appear about twice a year, and its software has influenced many other systems.
