Philippines Campaign

from 7 December 1941 to 8 May 1942

The Philippines campaign began hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor, when Japanese aircraft destroyed much of the American air power on Luzon, followed by landings in the north and south of the island. General Douglas MacArthur's combined American and Filipino forces withdrew to the Bataan peninsula and the fortress island of Corregidor, where they held out for months while short of food, medicine and ammunition. Bataan surrendered in April 1942, and the prisoners were forced to march north in what became known as the Bataan Death March. Corregidor fell in May. MacArthur had been ordered to leave for Australia, promising to return, and he led the American return to the islands in 1944.
