Palme d'Or

1955

The Palme d'Or is the highest prize awarded at the Cannes Film Festival in France, given to the best feature film of the competition. It was introduced in 1955, replacing the earlier Grand Prix, and the first winner was the American film Marty, directed by Delbert Mann. The prize takes the form of a golden palm branch, a reference to the palm tree on the coat of arms of the city of Cannes. A jury of filmmakers and artists selects the winner each year. Directors who have won it include Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese and Jane Campion, the first woman to win it, for The Piano in 1993.
