Origins of Super League Greece

1927

The Super League Greece is the top professional men's football league in Greece. Its origins go back to the national championship that was first played in 1927 and 1928, when the Panhellenic Championship brought together regional champions, and a more regular professional league was built after the Second World War. The present name and structure date from the 2000s, when the top clubs gained control of the competition. Olympiacos from Piraeus is the most successful club, with a majority of the titles, followed by Panathinaikos and AEK Athens. The league is known for the intense rivalries between these clubs and between Athens and Thessaloniki sides such as PAOK.
