Founding of Federal University of Minas Gerais

1927

The Federal University of Minas Gerais, known as UFMG, is a public university in Belo Horizonte, the capital of the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil. It was founded in 1927 as the University of Minas Gerais by combining existing higher-education schools, including the faculties of law, medicine, engineering and dentistry. The federal government took it over in 1949, and it was given its present name. The main campus at Pampulha, designed in part by modernist planners, is one of the largest in the country. UFMG is regularly ranked among the best universities in Brazil and Latin America, and it has been especially strong in research in fields such as biology, physics and medicine.
