Origins of EuroBasket Women

1938

EuroBasket Women is the European basketball championship for women's national teams, organised by the international federation's European branch, now FIBA Europe. The first tournament was held in Rome, and it began as a way of bringing together the leading women's teams on the continent. Early editions were dominated by the Soviet Union, which won most titles into the 1980s, and teams from Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria and Yugoslavia were also strong. After the breakup of the eastern bloc, countries such as Russia, Spain, France and Serbia have won titles. The championship has also served as a qualifying route to the Olympic Games and the World Cup, and it is now played every two years.
