Katyusha is a Soviet wartime song, with music by Matvey Blanter and words by Mikhail Isakovsky, about a girl who waits for her beloved soldier at the border while he is away on service. It was written in the late 1930s and was first performed in 1938, and became immensely popular during the Second World War, when many versions were sung by soldiers. The song's name was also given informally by Red Army soldiers to the multiple rocket launchers deployed from 1941, which shared the nickname. Katyusha has remained a well-known Russian folk-style song and has been performed and translated in many languages around the world.
