Prague Castle is a large complex of palaces, churches and fortifications that overlooks the Vltava river in Prague. According to tradition it was founded by Prince Borivoj of the Premyslid dynasty, who built the first church there. Over the centuries kings of Bohemia, Holy Roman emperors and, in modern times, presidents of Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic have used it as their seat. St Vitus Cathedral, begun in the 14th century under Charles IV, stands at its heart. It is listed in the Guinness World Records as the largest ancient castle complex in the world, and it contains the Bohemian crown jewels.
