Discovery of S/2011 J 2

27 September 2011

S/2011 J 2 is a small irregular moon of Jupiter discovered in 2011 by the astronomer Scott Sheppard and colleagues, who have found most of Jupiter's recently detected moons with large telescopes. Irregular moons are generally small bodies on distant, tilted and often retrograde orbits, thought to be captured asteroids or comet fragments rather than moons that formed with the planet. This one is only a few kilometres across, and it has not been given a proper name. The discovery added to Jupiter's growing count of known satellites.
