Jean-Paul Belmondo was born on 9 April 1933 in Neuilly-sur-Seine. A French actor, Belmondo became an emblem of the French New Wave after starring in Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless, in which he played a petty criminal on the run. He worked with other directors of the movement, including Truffaut, and with Jean-Pierre Melville, and later became a leading star of French popular cinema, performing many of his own stunts in action films such as That Man from Rio and The Professional. A former amateur boxer, he was known for his charm and his unconventional face. He returned to the stage and received a Cesar award in his later years.
