Founding of Turkish Airlines

20 May 1933

Turkish Airlines is the flag carrier of Turkey, and it began as a state airline with a small fleet of aircraft, set up under the Ministry of National Defence at the time of the young Turkish Republic. It was reorganised several times, and was named Turk Hava Yollari in the 1950s. In the following decades it grew from a regional operator into a major international airline, helped by a policy of expansion in the 2000s, and it flies to more countries than any other airline. It joined the Star Alliance in 2008. Its hub moved in 2019 from Ataturk Airport to the new Istanbul Airport, one of the largest in the world.
