The Empire of Trebizond was a Greek Byzantine successor state on the southeastern coast of the Black Sea, in what is now northeastern Turkey. It was founded by Alexios and David Komnenos, grandsons of the Byzantine emperor Andronikos I, shortly before the Fourth Crusade captured Constantinople in 1204, and they were helped by their relative Queen Tamar of Georgia. Isolated in the Pontic mountains, it controlled the main trade routes from the Black Sea toward Persia and the Caucasus, which brought great wealth. Its rulers kept the title of emperor and often married into neighbouring Turkish and Georgian dynasties. It outlasted Constantinople by some years, but fell to the Ottoman sultan Mehmed II, ending the last remnant of the Byzantine world.
