Construction of Ayr

1205

Ayr is a town and former royal burgh on the Firth of Clyde, on the west coast of Scotland, and it is the main town of the county of Ayrshire. It received its status as a royal burgh by a charter of King William the Lion at the start of the thirteenth century, and its castle and harbour made it an important trading and strategic centre. The town is closely associated with the poet Robert Burns, who was born in nearby Alloway in 1759, and the Auld Brig of Ayr is mentioned in his work. It is also known for its racecourse, which hosts the Scottish Grand National, and for its beaches.
