The Mamluk dynasty, also called the Slave dynasty, was the first dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate in northern India. Its founder, Qutb ud-Din Aibak, was a former Turkic slave general of Muhammad of Ghor, and he became ruler in Delhi after his master's death in 1206. Aibak began the Qutb Minar, and his successor Iltutmish consolidated the sultanate and gained recognition from the Abbasid caliph. Iltutmish's daughter Razia Sultana ruled in the 1230s, the only woman ever to rule the Delhi Sultanate. Balban later strengthened the army against Mongol raids. The dynasty ended when Jalal ud-Din Khalji seized power and founded the Khalji dynasty.
