Delhi Sultanate

from 1206 to 1526

The Delhi Sultanate was a series of Muslim dynasties that ruled much of northern India from Delhi. It was founded after the conquests of Muhammad of Ghor, and its first sultan was his former slave general Qutb al-Din Aibak. Five dynasties held power in turn: the Mamluk, Khalji, Tughlaq, Sayyid and Lodi. Under rulers such as Alauddin Khalji and Muhammad bin Tughluq the sultanate reached deep into the Deccan, and it built monuments such as the Qutb Minar. The invasion of Timur in 1398 weakened it badly, and it fell to Babur, who founded the Mughal Empire.
