On 28 August 1963, before the Lincoln Memorial at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, attended by about 250,000 people, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered one of the greatest speeches in American history. Departing from his text at the urging of the singer Mahalia Jackson, he described his dream that his four little children would one day live in a nation where they would not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character. The march helped to build support for the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. King was assassinated in Memphis in 1968.
