Mohammed VI of Morocco was born on 21 August 1963 in Rabat. The king of Morocco since 1999, Mohammed VI is a member of the Alaouite dynasty, which has ruled the country for centuries, and succeeded his father, Hassan II. He initially gained popularity by relaxing political repression and promoting social reforms, including a new family code that improved the legal status of women. During the Arab Spring in 2011, he responded to protests by approving a new constitution that gave more power to the prime minister, while retaining major authority for the monarchy. His reign has seen economic development and a continuing dispute over Western Sahara, and the restoration of ties with Israel in 2020.
