Origins of European Super League

18 April 2021

The European Super League was a proposed annual football competition in which a group of the continent's wealthiest clubs would have played as permanent members, rather than qualifying through domestic results as in the UEFA Champions League. Twelve clubs announced the project: six from England, three from Spain and three from Italy, with Real Madrid's president Florentino Perez as chairman. It was met with immediate opposition from fans, players, managers, national governments and football's governing bodies, UEFA and FIFA. Within two days, the English clubs withdrew, and the plan collapsed. The legal dispute continued, however, and a European Court of Justice ruling in 2023 said that UEFA's rules on approving new competitions were incompatible with EU competition law.
